We love, love, LOVE Mark. He is the first honest mechanic we've ever dealt with and a really cool guy. I came across him by accident (after a crappy mechanic messed up my car and it broke down on El Camino) and we've been with him ever since. We live in San Francisco but make the drive down to San Mateo just because he's the only guy we trust to be honest about what really needs to be done, his rates are decent, and he really knows his cars. Plus, he has a cool coffee machine in his waiting area. And a cool dog that occasionally makes an appearance. We. Love. Mark.
We live in Santa Cruz but if we lived in the bay area we would go to Mark in an instant! We were in the process of purchasing a car from a local used car dealer in San Mateo who is also "A" rated by BBB of San Francisco (Motor Masters is "A" too). Although the dealer has a good rating by BBB we still checked with AAA for their certified mechanics and chose Mark to do a pre-inspection so we would cover all bases. . My husband knows about cars and was certain that Mark knew what he was doing when he first talked with him on the phone. The dealer took the car to him and he gave it a thorough inspection, at a reasonable price, so that we would know exactly what we were purchasing. We feel confident that we have done everything possible before purchasing a car and it was Mark at Motor Masters who gave us the added security for our major purchase. If you want the work done right this is the place to go. Many thanks Mark.

"Motor Masters does excellent diagnostic and repair work. I have had both routine and custom work done at this shop, including some rare, difficult to obtain parts and specifications. Mark will provide reliable estimates (coming in below as often as not but always well below the dealer). He will also check-in with updates in the event something else arises while the vehicle is racked or disassembled, give alternatives and if the work exceeds the customer's expectations, break it down so that safety measures come first. You will then get a detailed printout of remaining work to be done and it can be prioritized to fit the vehicle needs with your budget. All work is done with professional precision and attention to detail as well as cost."

"If you want high quality service at very competitive prices, I strongly recommend Motor Masters. They are very honest, explain any car problems in laymen's terms if needed, and have extensive expertise. They quickly diagnosed and repaired my Prius when it suddenly stopped running, and charged very fair prices, much lower than competing offers.
Mark, the owner, was very straight forward, explaining the technical problems in simple terms. He is very trustworthy, taking pride in providing excellent service, and will not push for any repair which isn't needed."

Still 5 stars. Mark is still at it! Had to get some typical work done this time on my Suzuki and Mark handled is straight away. Car runs great and I'll probably get another 200K+ miles out of it if I want it.
The best part:
Mark explains everything. He told me exactly what was needed right now, and what might be needed in the future but he explained that I could wait on a couple of things if I wanted. This gave me, the customer, some choices. I also noticed he followed all the California laws in checking tire pressure, he checked all the lights (head lights, turn signals, brake lights, reverse lights, marker lights, interior lights and more!) Most other shops I have been to don't do this even thought it is required by CA law. This indicated to me that Mark takes his job seriously and is a trustworthy guy.
You can't go wrong with Motor Master Automotive. They've been in business for almost 30 years!!!
***** "I was having a series of errors that were throwing the check engine light (it had been on for over a year overall). I took the truck over to Mark at MotorMasters in San Mateo to diagnose and repair. Due to my own lack of maintenance, I had 4 different errors. Mark explained EACH error and what it meant and what I could do about it. Being an engineer and having some versing in automotive engineering specifically, what Mark was telling me passed the bs test. I knew he was being honest because what he told me was exactly what I had pulled from my own scanner and had another shop look at.
To get the car passed smog I obviously needed all the errors fixed and Mark knocked it out fast with quality. I feel I paid a real fair price and the truck runs PERFECT.
Here is what he fixed for me, and he also showed me each error from the scanner:
P0455 -- This is a large evaporation leak (Mark explained it and what he explained was EXACTLY what I already knew the error was). I had taken the truck to another mechanic that couldn't find the leak. Mark found the leak in 5 minutes. It took him longer to get the truck on the rack then it did to find and fix the leak. One thing fixed!
P0420 -- The dreaded left side catalytic convertor (My truck has 3). The other shop wanted to charge me close to $1000 to replace it. Mark explained to me I could get a universal one that was much cheaper and would work essentially the same. CHA-CHING. Money in the bank. It cost me less than half what the other place wanted. Another code down!
P0202 -- Second fuel injector was having trouble. Mark tested the computer to make sure it was OK and sending the right signal and it was, so he diagnosed it down to the second fuel injector itself (welp, that explains why the truck was running rough and I had decided to bring it in). He ordered the part and had it replaced quick style! Truck ran instantly smoother and all the power was restored. WIN.
P0171 -- A lean misfire code. Welp, Mark explained to me that it could be because of those pesky fuel injector problems I was having that were now fixed. He said it was also possible that there was a bad o2 sensor. He said he could clear the codes and see what happens after I drive the car for a bit. He didn't try to sell me anything at all! What? A mechanic that doesn't look to just replace part after part? I'm loving it! Not wanting to deal with any possible hassle I asked him how much it would cost to replace the o2 sensor anyway. Mine had 155,000 miles on the originals and they don't last forever. He gave me a good price, and get this, he had the part IN STOCK. He had the sensor replaced quick style.
Overall Mark saved me a ton of money by being honest and getting the work done right the first time. He fixed the entire truck in one day meaning I didn't have to take another day off of work. I could have dropped it off but I work so far away there was no point. All of these things added up into saving me over $1000 vs the other shop. That's $1000 I can save and use to do something fun with or give to a good cause.
I can honestly say Motor Masters is the ONLY place I will take my truck to from now on. Mark is honest, straightforward and will actually take time to explain what is going on in plain english if you want him to. He does quality work at a reasonalbe price. I may have been able to find the work cheaper some place but I would have sacrified quality for sure. Getting the car fixed right the first time and not having to go back and forth was my main goal and I am glad to have found Motor Masters who could do that for me.
5-stars straight across the board and the best part: NO MORE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT!"
"STILL taking my truck here when needed. Maintenance, tune-ups, service, and repairs. All of it. Motor Masters is the only place I will go, period. At the end of the day Mark has always been straight and honest with me, this is paramount in car repair. I needed a major maintenance to get everything through smog.. no problem. Mark handled it all, and I'm registered and on the road."

"Mark is "that guy" you have been looking for, he knows his business and Motor Master he is!
I tell the story of my RV's disc calipers freezing 100 feet from is business at 6:30PM! After troubleshooting the issues that night he ordered hard to get parts (front of this Vintage RV is a 1978 Dodge Sportsman) and then spending the night in our RV in the parking lot (plugged in!). Mark located STEEL calipers (he sent back the Phenolic cheapies) , REAL cotter pins (yes he noticed the pins on my new Ball Joints were "standard" so he replaced them these massive pins) and in a bucket he has kept for decades he found REAL keepers (not sure where these went but they were far more robust than the ones he pulled out), new brake hoses, pads and rotors turned this baby stops on a dime and straight as an arrow. We are bringing our RV to Mark and leaving it with him because Mark is "that guy" who you want to work on your ride. You can trust he will go the extra distance and make it real nice."

It's easy to tell that Mark just lives and breathes cars and that obvious love for what he does is infectious. I've recommended Motor Masters to several friends and all walked away with nothing but good reports"

"I've used Mark as my main car mechanic for over ten years and have found him to be forthright and honest. He has often explained in detail the issues and always gives me as many options as possible. He will show me the issues and demonstrate them. He is patient with my incessant questions. The work has always been guaranteed and I've never been unsatisfied with the outcome or costs. He is very personable and I've seen him treat other customers with respect. Highly recommended."
